Description
The Permobil Somn (officially Sömn) is 5 Minds Mobility's firmer layered foam hospital mattress, distributed in Canada by Permobil. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it on the bed for homes and care rooms in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is a 6 inch replacement surface with 3 inch transfer edges on both sides, a Serene foam heel section, and a fluid-resistant Startex full enclosure cover.
Somn is built for long-term care use on a matching hospital-bed frame. It is not a power-wheelchair cushion and it is not an alternating-pressure system. If you want gel and shear-reduction instead of this firmer foam stack, see the Permobil Allay. If a therapist asked for multi-zone cuts in the foam, see the Permobil Align.
Who this mattress is for
This mattress is for a person who needs a hospital-bed surface that stays in the middle of the deck, gives a firm foam feel, and has a wide edge to transfer from. Families usually call us when someone is coming home from hospital, when a regular consumer mattress is sliding or bottoming on a homecare bed, or when a therapist has asked for a 36, 39, 42, or 48 inch by 80 inch foam replacement.
Choose a different surface if the care plan needs gel, a ROHO or Vicair insert, or a pump. The Permobil Adapt is the SRT foam that accepts those air sections. If the person is near the weight limit on a 36 or 39 inch Somn, ask us before you order a wider Somn or a bariatric Align.
- Home care on a 36 to 48 inch hospital bed, when a firmer foam surface is enough
- Long-term care rooms that want a 3 inch transfer edge and a washable enclosure cover
- Anyone who does not need a pump, gel swirl, or removable air inserts
Construction and how it works
Somn is a reactive foam mattress. The person sinks into a layered foam stack. There is no pump and no air cells. Permobil's current Somn sheet describes a 4 inch base layer and a 2 inch top layer, with a Serene foam section at the heel. The 3 inch transfer edges on both sides are there to keep the person centered and to give a firmer place to sit before standing.
The cover is a fluid-resistant Startex full enclosure. It zips off for wipe-down. Permobil's cleaning sheet for this fabric family asks you to use neutral soap and lukewarm water, rinse, and let the cover dry. Do not put harsh solvents on it. Ask us before anyone tries a washing machine. This is not the same construction as Align or Allay: Somn does not use Shear Reduction Technology (SRT).
Permobil Somn specifications
These figures are for the Somn family Westin sells. The specification tab holds the stored values. Permobil's current Somn brochure lists a 6 inch height, widths of 36, 39, 42, and 48 inches, an 80 inch length, and a 350 to 500 lb weight range. Custom sizes are available if you call us.
Westin's default SKU on this card is SOMN4880, the 48 inch by 80 inch by 6 inch mattress. Permobil prints a 350 lb capacity on the 36 inch row. The 48 inch row is the 500 lb row. If you need the 42 inch width, ask us to confirm the rating for that size before you order. Warranty for the original purchaser is a 2 year limited warranty on the 5 Minds Mobility mattress and cover.
Choose Mattress Size
Use Choose Mattress Size to set the width. Every row on this picker is 80 inches long. The labels currently say 7 inches high. Somn is a 6 inch mattress. Order the width that matches the sleep deck, not the 7 inch figure.
- 36"W x 80"L x 7"H (order this for a standard 36 inch homecare deck; the mattress is 6 inches high)
- 39"W x 80"L x 7"H
- 42"W x 80"L x 7"H
- 48"W x 80"L x 7"H
A 36 inch Somn fits a standard homecare deck. A 42 or 48 inch Somn needs the matching bariatric deck. If you are not sure which width the therapist asked for, call (905) 451-7743 before you order.
Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: ODSP, March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), hardship funding programs, and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.
Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team delivers and sets up this mattress across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, place it on the bed, and show you the cover and the transfer edge before we leave.
We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a mattress first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased mattresses are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.
Hospital mattresses are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the mattress is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
Which Westin beds this mattress fits
Match the mattress width to the sleep deck. A 36 inch Somn sits on the Permobil Halsa and on the Drive Delta 1000. A 48 inch Somn needs a 48 inch deck such as the Drive 15302LW. Ask us before you pair a 35 inch Atlas-style deck or a consumer Harmony size with this surface.
Service and warranty
When the cover or the foam needs work, you call the shop that set the mattress up. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.
Permobil / 5 Minds Mobility warranty
Permobil Canada's January 2026 surfaces guide prints a 2 year limited warranty on 5 Minds Mobility mattresses, surfaces, and covers. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.
Frequently asked questions
How is Somn different from an alternating-pressure mattress?
Somn is foam only. The person lies on layered foam. There is no pump, no cycle time, and no air cells to set. An alternating-pressure system such as the Permobil Pro-Care Optima uses a pump to change pressure on a timer. Your therapist decides which class the care plan needs.
How do I clean the Somn cover?
Unzip the Startex enclosure and wipe it with neutral soap and lukewarm water. Rinse and let it dry before you put it back on. Permobil's fabric sheet says not to use harsh cleaners or solvents, and it does not recommend machine washing or machine drying. Ask us before you try a washer.
What is the weight rating?
Permobil prints a 350 to 500 lb range for Somn. The 36 inch row is 350 lb. The 48 inch row (SOMN4880) is 500 lb. If you are ordering 42 inches, call (905) 451-7743 and we will confirm that size before you buy.
What size do I need?
Measure the sleep deck, not the old consumer mattress. Somn is sold in 36, 39, 42, and 48 inch widths, all 80 inches long and 6 inches high. A 36 inch homecare bed takes the 36 inch row. A 42 or 48 inch bariatric bed takes the matching width.
Does Somn have a pump, and is it noisy?
No. Somn has no pump. You will not hear a compressor. If the care plan later needs a pump, that is a different mattress, not an add-on for Somn.
What is the warranty on the Permobil Somn?
Permobil Canada lists a 2 year limited warranty on 5 Minds Mobility mattresses, surfaces, and covers. Westin Healthcare processes the claim. Details are on our service and repairs page.
Can funding help with this mattress in Ontario?
Several Ontario funding routes can help with a therapeutic support surface. Eligibility depends on the person's situation and assessment. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page and we will point you to the right route before anyone starts paperwork.
Can I rent this mattress before I buy?
Westin rents hospital beds with a standard therapeutic mattress. Somn is sold to match a specific width and care plan. If you only need a bed and a basic surface for a short recovery, start on the hospital bed rentals page. If the therapist named Somn, we schedule a purchased mattress.
Will Somn fit a Permobil power wheelchair?
No. Somn is a hospital-bed replacement mattress. It is not built as a seat cushion or a power-base pad. Use it on a matching hospital or homecare bed frame.
Is Somn the same as Koppla or Optima 2?
No. Koppla is the softer 6 inch sibling with Serene foam over the transfer edges. Optima 2 is a different nylon-cover foam mattress. Somn is the firmer 4 inch base plus 2 inch top with Serene at the heel.
What is included with this Somn?
You get the Somn foam core and the Startex full enclosure cover in the width you pick under Choose Mattress Size. Side rails, a bed frame, and a pump are not included. Westin Healthcare delivers and sets the mattress up across Brampton and the GTA.
