The Invacare Matrx MAC Back Hug StaminaFibre is Invacare and Motion Concepts' adjustable-contour wheelchair back support with a machine-washable StaminaFibre insert, mixable laterals, and a 300 lb (136 kg) rating. Westin Healthcare sells the Hug model in 16, 18, and 20 in widths and heights and fits it for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is the Hug model. It is not the Dual Layer Foam MAC.

Motion Concepts recommends the Hug insert when the goal is to accommodate mild postural asymmetry. A SHAPE foam kit under the Hug is a separate option for moderate asymmetry. Dual Layer Foam is a different MAC model for a more symmetrical presentation.

Who this back support is for

This wheelchair back support is for a person who stays at or under 300 lb and needs a back whose laterals can change height, width, and contour after the chair is set up. Motion Concepts also notes scapular support for tilt and recline when the therapist chooses that setup.

Fit, contour, and hardware

Use Back Width and Back Height to pick 16, 18, or 20 in. A 16 in MAC fits chairs 15-18 in wide. An 18 in fits 17-20 in. A 20 in fits 19-22 in. EasySet adjusts height, depth, angle, and rotation. Pins fit a chair 1 in narrower to 2 in wider than the back. Hardware fits 3/4 in, 7/8 in, and 1 in canes. Laterals grow 1/2 in per side (1 in total) and change height with the person seated.

Official MAC sizes also include 14, 15, 17, and 19 in widths and 14 in and 22 in heights. Ask us if you need one of those. Fixed EasySet is the Motion Concepts hardware note for tilt and recline. Extended Range EasySet is the note when a SHAPE insert adds thickness.

Foam, cover, and care

The Hug StaminaFibre insert is the soft, conformable fill Motion Concepts specifies for immersion and microclimate control. The sell sheet says it is machine wash and dry friendly. The outer cover is moisture-resistant Meshtex. The seating therapist still sets the laterals and any SHAPE pieces. We do not give clinical positioning advice.

MAC Hug is the configurable-contour Matrx back. The Matrx E2 is the newer fixed-contour Elite series with Ripple Foam. The Elite TR is the SuperSoft tilt back without mixable laterals. The E2 Deep 16 x 18 is a single 6 in E2 size.

Foam back support, gel cushions, and air cushions

The Invacare Matrx MAC Hug is a foam and fibre wheelchair back support. A gel or air seat cushion is a different product. See the JAY Ion or the ROHO High Profile when the seating therapist is choosing the seat.

Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario

This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost.
