Description
The Span America PressureGuard APM2 Safety Supreme is the raised-edge APM2 air therapy mattress. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare quotes it, delivers it, and sets it on the bed for homes and care settings in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.
You get the same four-mode APM2 air therapy (alternating pressure, lateral rotation, Float, and Auto Firm) plus a Geo-Mattress with Wings style raised foam perimeter. The centre sits at 7 inches and the sides rise to 9 inches, so the person is prompted away from the edge while the sleeping surface stays a Geo-Matt segmented top over head-to-foot air cylinders. This listing is the Safety Supreme raised-edge APM2 only. The standard APM2 with a flat 7 inch height is a separate Span surface.
Who this mattress is for
This mattress is for a person on a 35 inch hospital-style or long-term care bed whose care team has asked for a powered PressureGuard APM2 and also wants a raised perimeter. Span writes the APM2 family for prevention and treatment of pressure injuries, and for people who cannot or will not reposition often. Safety Supreme adds people at risk for falls. Span rates it at 350 lb.
Families and purchasing coordinators usually call us when a therapist has named APM2 Safety Supreme, not the flat-edge APM2 and not a non-powered Geo-Mattress with Wings. If the care team asked for the standard APM2, for Geo-Mattress with Wings, or for a PressureGuard Custom Care or Span-Care surface we already stock, ask us for that model instead of stretching this one.
- 35 inch by 80 inch decks such as the Span America Advantage, using the 80 by 35 inch Safety Supreme (SAF5880-29)
- 35 inch decks in 75 or 84 inch lengths when the sleep deck is that length
- Users within Span's 350 lb rating who need powered air therapy and a raised edge
Construction and how it works
Safety Supreme is a powered air-and-foam mattress. Four air cylinders run head to foot inside a foam shell. A Geo-Matt segmented topper, more than 800 individually articulating cells, sits over those cylinders and helps move heat and moisture away from the skin. The sides are the Geo-Mattress with Wings raised foam, topped with the same Geo-Matt surface, so the raised edges are not exposed hard foam. Lowered, padded openings along the long edges make transfers easier.
The 5900 digital control unit hangs on the footboard and plugs into a wall outlet. On the control unit you choose Alternate, Float, or a timed Auto Firm for transfers, daily care, and CPR. Auto Firm holds for 20 minutes, then returns to the last mode. A recessed toggle under a flap at the foot of the mattress selects alternating pressure or basic lateral rotation. You do not swap air lines to change that therapy. Indexed comfort buttons set firmness. Lights and a selectable audible alarm report low pressure and power failure.
The cover is fluid-proof, anti-fungal, bacteriostatic non-stretch coated nylon. It wipes clean in place. This Safety Supreme cover is not the LifeSpan stretch cover used on the standard APM2.

Size options
Use Choose Mattress Size. The default on this page is 80 x 35 in (SAF5880-29), the usual match for a 35 inch by 80 inch hospital deck. Each size ships with the 5900 control unit.
- 80 x 35 in (SAF5880-29)
- 75 x 35 in (SAF5875-29)
- 84 x 35 in (SAF5884-29)
Measure the sleep deck before you pick. Span publishes Safety Supreme in a 35 inch width and in 75, 80, and 84 inch lengths. Call (905) 451-7743 if your frame is 36, 39, or 42 inches so we can confirm the closest size.
Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.
Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team delivers and sets up this mattress across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, place it on the bed, hang the 5900 control unit, connect the air lines, and show you Alternate, Float, Auto Firm, and the raised sides before we leave.
We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a mattress first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased mattresses are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.
Hospital mattresses are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the mattress is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
Which beds this mattress fits
Span sizes PressureGuard APM2 Safety Supreme to a 35 inch width in the three lengths above. Span's fit rule is to place the mattress directly on a healthcare bed frame, never on top of another mattress, and to match length and width so gaps stay small. The raised sides fill the space between the bottom of the siderail and the mattress surface.
The 80 by 35 inch Safety Supreme (SAF5880-29) matches the 35 inch by 80 inch sleep deck on the Span America Advantage. A 75 or 84 inch Safety Supreme matches a 35 inch deck of that length. The Span America Encore runs 36, 39, and 42 inches. Those widths are not printed 35 inch Safety Supreme sizes. If the Encore or a ReadyWide frame is the bed, ask us to size the surface to the width you will actually run. See all hospital beds if you are still choosing a platform, and all medical mattresses if you need a different therapy class.
The 5900 control unit needs a working wall outlet. Span rates it at 100-120 VAC, 60 Hz, and 0.17 A. Hang it on the footboard with the fold-out hangers. Connect the air lines at the foot of the mattress until they click. Plug the supplied cord into the wall, then switch the unit on. Route the cord and the air lines clear of moving bed parts and walkways. A hanger lock strip (P10064) is the Span part for a thin homecare footboard.
If the care team asked for the same APM2 air therapies without the raised sides, see the PressureGuard APM2. If they asked for a non-powered foam raised edge, see the Geo-Mattress with Wings. If a clinician has asked for a Span convertible or low-air-loss surface we already stock, we quote PressureGuard Custom Care (non-powered), Custom Care Convertible with low air loss, and Span-Care Convertible from those cards.

Frequently asked questions
How is APM2 Safety Supreme different from the standard APM2?
Both use the same 5900 control unit and the same four therapy modes. Safety Supreme adds the Wings-style raised foam sides (7 inch centre, 9 inch sides) and a non-stretch coated nylon cover. The standard APM2 is a flat 7 inch mattress with a LifeSpan stretch cover. This page sells Safety Supreme only.
How is Safety Supreme different from Geo-Mattress with Wings?
Wings is a non-powered foam mattress with 8 inch sides, a 6 inch centre, and a 400 lb rating. Safety Supreme is a powered APM2 air mattress with 9 inch sides, a 7 inch centre, a 5900 control unit, and a 350 lb rating. If the care team wrote Wings, see the Geo-Mattress with Wings.
Is this a powered mattress, and what therapies does it offer?
Yes. The 5900 control unit powers alternating pressure, basic lateral rotation, Float (powered flotation), and a 20 minute Auto Firm. A toggle at the foot of the mattress chooses alternating pressure or lateral rotation. The 10 minute Alternate cycle then runs that chosen therapy.
What power does the 5900 need?
A standard wall outlet. Span rates the 5900 at 100-120 VAC, 60 Hz, and 0.17 A, listed to UL 60601-1 and certified to CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 601.1. Hang the unit on the footboard, click the air lines in, and plug the supplied cord into the wall. Do not run the cord through moving bed parts.
What is the weight rating?
Span rates PressureGuard APM2 Safety Supreme at 350 lb. Tell us the person's weight and the deck width when you order.
What sizes can I get?
Official Safety Supreme sizes on this page are 75, 80, and 84 inches long on a 35 inch width, all 7 inches at the centre and 9 inches at the sides. The default is 80 by 35 inches (SAF5880-29). Each size includes the 5900 control unit.
Which bed does this mattress fit?
Match the Safety Supreme width and length to the sleep deck, and place it directly on a healthcare frame. A 35 by 80 inch Safety Supreme fits the Span America Advantage. The Span America Encore runs 36, 39, and 42 inches, which are not printed 35 inch Safety Supreme widths. Measure a 36 inch deck with us before you pick.
Do the raised sides replace siderails?
No. Span designed the 9 inch sides to prompt the person away from the edge and to fill the space under a siderail. Whether rails stay on the bed is a clinical decision for that person. Span still says to use a mattress that fits the frame and keep gaps small.
How do I clean the cover?
Span specifies a fluid-proof, anti-fungal, bacteriostatic coated nylon that wipes clean in place with neutral suds and lukewarm water. For disinfection Span names a phenolic or quaternary hospital-grade cleaner. Unplug the 5900 before you wipe it with a well-wrung cloth.
What is the warranty?
Span publishes 3 years on the mattress, 2 years on the cover, and 18 months on the 5900 control unit. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.
Does ADP cover this mattress in Ontario?
No. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover hospital beds or mattresses. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community programs may still help. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you buy.
Can I try this mattress before I buy?
Westin Healthcare rents standard full-electric hospital beds that include a therapeutic mattress. The PressureGuard APM2 Safety Supreme itself is a purchase item. Ask us when you call if a short in-home look at a powered air surface would help before you order Safety Supreme.
