Description
The Span America Advantage QD1000 is Span America's long-term care hospital bed in the Q-Series. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it up for long-term care homes and for families in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area whose therapist has asked for this grade of bed.
Four motors move the height, the back, and the knee. A hand pendant runs everyday positions. Span lists a floor-to-deck range of 7-7/8 inches to 30 inches, a 500 lb safe working load, and a 350 lb maximum patient weight. The sleep surface is 35 inches wide by 80 inches long. Comfort Chair, Trendelenburg, and reverse Trendelenburg need the optional foot-end staff controller.
Who this bed is for
This bed is for a long-term care setting, or for a private home that needs a low, full-electric clinical frame. It is not a basic homecare package and it is not a luxury mattress platform. Span writes the Advantage for resting and sleeping in a long-term care environment: a no-sag grid deck, mobility at any height, and staff lockouts when the foot-end controller is fitted.
Purchasing coordinators and directors of care usually call us when a resident needs a low deck with a 500 lb safe working load and a 35 inch sleep surface. Families call when a therapist has named this platform. If you want the Span long-term care bed with a retractable deck and a wider ReadyWide surface, see the Span America Encore. If you want a simpler homecare package, start with the Drive Delta 1000. If the person's own weight is near or over 350 lbs, ask us about the Drive 15300LW 42-inch bariatric bed instead of stretching this occupant limit.
- Long-term care homes and retirement residences that need a low resident bed with a grid deck
- Private homes where a therapist has asked for the Span Advantage QD1000
- Anyone who needs electric height, back, and knee, and may add staff-only Trendelenburg later
What you get
The Advantage we sell is the QD1000 35 inch by 80 inch configuration (Westin SKU QD1000B). The hand pendant runs height, back, knee, and auto-contour. The bed travels almost straight up and down, so it does not walk into the wall as it rises. Span's 3 inch total-locking casters are on the frame. The STANDARD SWIVEL/LOCKING CASTERS row under Choose Mobility Controls is the 360-degree mobility upgrade, not a second set of ordinary casters.
Head and foot boards are chosen with Choose Board Series, Choose Board Colors, and Choose Board Size. Side rails are chosen with Choose Side Rails. A mattress is not included. The optional foot-end staff controller is not one of the selectors; ask us if the care team specified Comfort Chair or Trendelenburg.
- Eleven-function hand pendant with auto-contour
- Four DC actuators
- Precision-welded orthopedic grid deck with anchored corner mattress retainers
- Individually powder-coated components with a flexible polyester anti-microbial finish
- Vascular foot ratchet
- Baseboard bumper and arched legs
- Heavy-duty 3 inch total-locking swivel casters, mobility at any height from 7-7/8 to 30 inches
- Optional 24 V backup battery, sold separately, not on the selectors below
Span America Advantage QD1000 specifications
These figures are for Westin SKU QD1000B, the Span America Advantage Q-Series 35 inch by 80 inch bed. The specification tab holds the stored values. Span's current brochure and owner manual list a floor-to-deck height of 7-7/8 inches to 30 inches and a sleep surface of 35 inches wide by 80 inches long. Overall width with side rails is 40-1/2 inches. A 76 inch youth length and an 84 inch extender kit exist on the factory list; they are not selectors below.
Safe working load is 500 lbs for the person, the mattress, the boards, the rails, and anything else on the bed. Maximum patient weight on Span's owner manual is 350 lbs. Back elevation is 0 to 70 degrees. Knee elevation is 0 to 30 degrees. Bed weight without accessories is 160 lbs.
Warranty for the original purchaser is 15 years on the frame, 15 years on welds, 5 years on the control box and actuators, and 1 year on batteries, hand pendants, foot-end controllers, cables, wear parts, and bed accessories. Labour is not included.
Choose Side Rails, boards, and Choose Mobility Controls
Use the selectors to set rails, the head and footboard, and mobility extras. There is no mattress selector below. Ask us if you need a therapeutic surface sized 35 inches by 80 inches.
Choose Side Rails
Add any of these. Official Span rails are optional accessories, not a locked-in kit.
- Moulded 3-position assist rail (Pair)
- Moulded 1/2 head-end rail (Pair)
- 3-position metal assist rail (Pair)
- Fixed Metal Assist Rail With 36" Width Mount
- Collapsible 3/4 side rail
The moulded 3-position pair is Span's frame-mounted pivot assist (RAD959). The moulded 1/2 head-end pair is RAD308H. The metal 3-position pair is RM930. The fixed metal rail is RM950. The collapsible 3/4 rail is RAD501 for the 35 inch deck. Span's owner manual says to use rails and mattresses that fit this frame, and to keep the mattress centred so the person cannot slip into a gap. If you are not sure which rail style the therapist asked for, call (905) 451-7743 before you order.
Choose Board Series
Pick one:
- Standard (melamine)
- Lincoln (melamine)
- Elite HPL
Standard and Lincoln are Span's melamine profiles. Elite HPL is the high-pressure laminate family. The Valley Oak finish pairs with the melamine boards only.
Choose Board Colors
Pick one:
- Valley Oak (standard boards only)
- Candle Light
- Hardrock Maple
- Summer Flame
- Choco
- Shiraz Cherry
Valley Oak is the standard-board finish on Span's current colour card. If you are not sure which finish will sit in the room, call (905) 451-7743 and we will walk through samples at the store.
Choose Board Size
Pick one:
- 36" pair - STANDARD
- 40" pair
- 43" pair
The 36 inch pair is the usual match for the 35 inch deck. The 40 and 43 inch pairs are for decks widened with the Q6633 or Q6709 expander kits. This listing does not include the tool-less 42 inch expander kit; ask us if the care team specified a wider surface.
Choose Mobility Controls
Add either or both:
- 360-degree mobility casters (Q6663)
- Floor lock kit (Q6615)
The base QD1000 already rolls on 3 inch total-locking casters. The 360-degree row is the Q6663 mobility upgrade; the floor lock is Span's Q6615 foot-end kit. If the care team asked for factory 360-degree mobility, the floor lock, and foot-end controls as one build, ask us about that configuration before you tick both boxes.
Funding help for a hospital bed in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds. OHIP does not cover them either. Depending on the person, other programs may help, including ODSP, March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, hardship funding programs, and community support programs.
Westin Healthcare works with these funding programs every week. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the contact page and we will check which programs fit your situation before any paperwork starts. The funding page lists the programs we work with.
Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team delivers and sets up this bed across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, assemble it, and show you the hand control before we leave.
We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a bed first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased beds are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.
Hospital beds are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the bed is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.
Service, repairs, and warranty
When something on the bed needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.
Span America manufacturer warranty
Span America's standard warranty for the original purchaser is 15 years on the frame, 15 years on welds, 5 years on the control box and actuators, and 1 year on batteries, hand pendants, foot-end controllers, cables, wear parts, and bed accessories. Labour is not included. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.
Frequently asked questions
Does OHIP cover hospital beds?
No. Hospital beds in Ontario are not covered by OHIP. Depending on the person, March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, or a community support program may still help. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will check which path fits before anyone starts paperwork.
Does ADP cover hospital beds in Ontario?
No. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover hospital beds. OHIP does not cover them either. The funding page lists the programs Westin Healthcare works with, including March of Dimes, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community support programs.
What is the difference between a full-electric and a semi-electric hospital bed?
The Span America Advantage QD1000 is full electric. The hand pendant moves height, back, and knee. A semi-electric bed usually moves the head and foot with a motor and leaves height to a crank. Comfort Chair, Trendelenburg, and reverse Trendelenburg on this bed need the optional foot-end staff controller.
How is the Advantage different from the Span America Encore?
Both are Span long-term care beds that lower to 7-7/8 inches. The Span America Encore adds GlideAlign (12 inches of deck retraction), ReadyWide expansion from 36 to 42 inches, a 600 lb safe working load, and a 31 inch high position. The Advantage uses a 35 inch deck, a 500 lb safe working load, a 350 lb maximum patient weight, and a 30 inch high position, without the retractable deck.
What mattress fits the Span America Advantage?
Span's sleep surface on this SKU is 35 inches wide by 80 inches long. A mattress is not one of the selectors, so we size a hospital-bed mattress to that deck. Ask your therapist before you pick an alternating-pressure or low-air-loss surface.
Can I rent a hospital bed before buying?
Westin Healthcare rents standard full-electric hospital beds with side rails and a therapeutic mattress. See current packages and rates on the hospital bed rentals page. The Advantage itself is a purchase item. If you later buy, ask about the Rental to Purchase First Month Credit program so we can apply the program rules to the bed you keep.
How fast can a hospital bed be delivered in the GTA?
Westin's team delivers and sets up purchased beds across Brampton and the GTA on a scheduled date. Call (905) 451-7743 for the next opening. Same-day delivery belongs to the hospital bed rental service, not automatically to a purchased bed.
What is included with this Span America Advantage?
You get the Advantage QD1000 full-electric frame with the hand pendant, the grid deck, casters, the baseboard bumper, and mattress stops. Choose Board Series, Choose Board Colors, and Choose Board Size set the head and foot boards. Choose Side Rails adds a rail pair if you want one. A mattress is not included. The foot-end staff controller is not one of the selectors.
What is the weight capacity of the Span America Advantage?
Span lists a 500 lb safe working load for the person, the mattress, the boards, the rails, and anything else on the bed. The owner manual also prints a 350 lb maximum patient weight. If the person is near that occupant limit, ask us about a bariatric hospital bed instead of stretching this frame.
What happens if the power goes out?
A 24 V backup battery is optional and is not on the selectors below. Ask us for the Advantage field or factory pack if you want the bed to move during an outage. Without that pack the bed stays where it was when the power failed.
What is the warranty on the Span America Advantage?
For the original purchaser, Span covers the frame for 15 years, welds for 15 years, the control box and actuators for 5 years, and batteries, pendants, foot-end controllers, cables, wear parts, and accessories for 1 year. Those terms are printed in Span's INST1269 REV C owner manual. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.
Does this bed come with side rails?
No. Side rails are optional. Use Choose Side Rails to add Moulded 3-position assist rail (Pair), Moulded 1/2 head-end rail (Pair), 3-position metal assist rail (Pair), Fixed Metal Assist Rail With 36" Width Mount, or Collapsible 3/4 side rail. If you are not sure which style was specified, call (905) 451-7743.
