Description
The Prism Basic Back is a Future Mobility wheelchair back support for mild to moderate postural support. Westin Healthcare fits it in Brampton and across the Greater Toronto Area.
A 5052 aluminum shell, replaceable foam, and quick-release cane clamps give a rigid back without built-in laterals. Future Mobility ships stock, non-stock, custom, and bariatric widths. Choose Cushion Size follows the non-stock band. Ask us if you need a stock pair, a custom cut, or a 21-24 in bariatric shell.
Who this back support is for
This wheelchair back support is for a person who needs a firm foam shell and a settable angle, at or under 250 lb (113 kg) on standard widths or 350 lb (159 kg) on bariatric widths, and who does not need tall laterals. Families usually call us when the sling on the chair hammocks or the person needs a quick-release rigid back for a folding frame.
If the therapist wants 6 in laterals, use the Prism Ultra Back. If they want air laterals, use the Prism Air Back. If they want rebuildable cubes, use the Prism Truefitt Back.
- Mild to moderate postural support, as Future Mobility states it
- No factory laterals on this model
- Hardware that comes off the canes for folding or transfer
Shell, foam, and hardware
The shell is 5052 aluminum. Foam is replaceable. The cover is a 4-way stretch outer; an infection-control cover is the other factory option. Future Mobility's user manual says to keep the cover on and to wash it cold on a gentle cycle, then air dry.
Cane-clamp hardware is included. Clamps fit 1 in (25 mm) posts, with inserts for 7/8 in (22 mm). The brochure also lists 3/4 in (19 mm) tubing. The silver flip releases the shell. Three Allen screws set height. Angle is 15 degrees forward and 20 degrees back, with a 5 in (127 mm) forward and rear range. Pins take up to 2 in (51 mm) of seat-width difference. Future Mobility prints that the back can be adjusted while the person stays in the chair. A seating therapist should make the first set.
Prism Basic Back specifications
These figures are Future Mobility's July 2025 Basic brochure. The specification tab holds the stored values. Use the brochure when they fight.
Capacity 250 lb (113 kg) standard, 350 lb (159 kg) bariatric. Product weight 4.75 lb (2.15 kg) at 18 in W x 16 in H (46 x 41 cm); 6.7 lb (3.0 kg) bariatric. Warranty for the original purchaser: 3 years limited on the back, 90 days on the cover, 1 year on the hardware.
Sizes and options
Use Choose Cushion Size for the width and height pair. Future Mobility's non-stock Basic sizes are 14x14, 16x18, 17x16, 17x20, 18x18, 19x16, 19x20, and 20x18 in. Stock pairs (16/18/20 x 16/20) and 21-24 in bariatric shells are other order bands. Ask us if the pair you need is not the non-stock list. We confirm cane width before we order.
Prism Basic, Ultra, Air, or Truefitt
The Prism Basic Back is the entry rigid shell on this ladder. The Prism Ultra Back keeps the same hardware and adds 6 in laterals. The Prism Air Back adds air laterals and lumbar. The Prism Truefitt Back rebuilds with foam cubes. The Prism Adjustable Tension Backrest is the strap back when a rigid shell is more than the person needs.
Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario
This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost. Not every product qualifies, so talk to us before you buy. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs can also help. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through.
Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA
Westin's own team delivers this wheelchair back support across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, fit the clamps when the hardware allows, and show you the latch before we leave.
We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a back support first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased seating is delivered on a scheduled date.
This back support is smaller than a hospital bed. If it is going outside the GTA, ask us about parcel or freight shipping. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and warranty
When something on the back support needs work, you call the shop that set it up, not a distant parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.
Future Mobility manufacturer warranty
Future Mobility Healthcare warrants the Prism Basic Back to the original purchaser for 3 years limited on the back, 90 days on the cover, and 1 year on the hardware, under normal use. Wear, misuse, and unauthorised changes sit outside that term. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.
Frequently asked questions
What Size Wheelchair Back Do I Need?
The Prism Basic Back is ordered to the wheelchair's back-cane width and the therapist's recommended height. Measure the canes, not the old sling. Non-stock pairs include 14x14 through 20x18 in as Future Mobility lists them.
Does ADP Cover Wheelchair Cushions?
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program can fund qualifying seating through an authorizer assessment. A specific Prism Basic Back size is not guaranteed. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you buy.
What Is the Weight Capacity of the Prism Basic Back?
The Prism Basic Back is rated at 250 lb (113 kg) on standard widths and 350 lb (159 kg) on bariatric widths. Stay at or under the rating for the width you order.
How Much Does the Prism Basic Back Weigh?
The Prism Basic Back weighs 4.75 lb (2.15 kg) at 18 in by 16 in on Future Mobility's brochure, and 6.7 lb (3.0 kg) in the bariatric example.
Does the Prism Basic Back Have Laterals?
The Prism Basic Back is the Prism rigid shell without factory laterals. If the therapist wants 6 in laterals, order the Prism Ultra Back instead.
What Tubing Does the Hardware Fit?
The Prism Basic Back cane clamps fit 1 in (25 mm) back posts. Inserts are supplied for 7/8 in (22 mm). The brochure also lists 3/4 in (19 mm) tubing.
Can the Back Come Off for a Folding Chair?
The Prism Basic Back uses Future Mobility's quick-release latch. Flip the silver lever and pull the shell off the cane clamps so the chair can fold.
How Do I Clean the Prism Basic Back?
The Prism Basic Back cover washes cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, with no bleach or fabric softener, then air dries. Wipe the shell with a damp cloth.
What Is the Warranty on the Prism Basic Back?
Future Mobility prints 3 years limited on the Prism Basic Back shell, 90 days on the cover, and 1 year on the hardware, for the original purchaser.
Is This a Wheelchair or Only a Back?
The Prism Basic Back is a wheelchair back support that mounts on an existing chair. It is not a wheelchair by itself.
