Description

The Span America Topper MicroEnvironment Manager is a reusable powered air coverlet. Span America is a Savaria company. Westin Healthcare quotes it, delivers it, and fits it on the mattress you already have for hospitals, long-term care homes, and families in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area whose therapist has asked for microclimate management on a pressure-redistributing surface.

This is a coverlet, not a mattress. It sits on a healthcare mattress. A compact 2100 control unit hangs on the footboard and sends a gentle stream of air under the top layer so heat and moisture vapour can leave the skin. Span rates the 36 inch size at 500 lb, the 42 inch size at 750 lb, and the 48 inch size at 1000 lb, and never above the rating of the mattress underneath. The default on this page is 80 x 36 inches (MEM36).

Who this coverlet is for

This coverlet is for a person who already has, or is getting, a pressure-redistributing mattress, and whose care plan names the Span America Topper or a reusable powered microclimate coverlet. Span writes it for use with that mattress to help prevent and treat skin breakdown through Stage 4 by reducing excess heat and moisture, especially for people who are obese, who have a fever, or who sweat heavily because of infection, antibiotics, or pain medicine.

The 36 inch coverlet sits on a 35 to 36 inch hospital mattress, including a standard 36 x 80 homecare deck such as the Drive Delta 1000. The 36 and 42 inch sizes match those sleep widths on the Span America Encore. A 42 inch coverlet is the size for a 42 inch deck such as the Drive 15300LW. Span also lists 54 and 60 inch widths, and a 75 inch length in the 54 inch width.

If the care plan named a Geo-Mattress or a foam overlay as the surface itself, we quote that surface. If the therapist named a PressureGuard air or convertible mattress, we already sell PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible: ask us to quote the named model, and we can add a Topper on top when the plan calls for both. For a simpler foam mattress underneath, see the Gravity 9. For a non-powered air-and-foam mattress that can take a pump later, see the Drive Balanced Aire NP.

  • Acute care, long-term care, or a private home when the therapist named the Span America Topper
  • A 36, 42, or 48 inch hospital mattress that needs a powered microclimate layer
  • A 54 or 60 inch mattress when the care team named one of those Topper widths

Construction and how it works

The Topper is two layers. The outer coverlet is highly vapour-permeable. You can wipe it in place with a hospital-grade cleaner, or unzip it, machine wash it, and let it air-dry. The inner layer is Span's Air Diffusion Matrix fabric. That fabric stays open under the person so air can keep moving, including at the sacrum. Moisture vapour passes through the top layer. The air stream carries it away before it can sit as liquid on the skin.

Fitted pockets go over the head and foot of the mattress. A strap runs under the mattress and buttons on the other side. The airline stays at the foot end and clicks into the 2100 control unit with a quick-disconnect fitting. The control unit hangs on the footboard by its hook. On a smooth footboard you can press the suction cups against the board. If the footboard shape will not take the hook, a rear strap ties the unit to the frame.

Plug the supplied cord into a wall outlet. A green light shows the unit is ready. Unplug it to stop the air. The carton also includes a carry bag so the rolled coverlet and the control unit travel together.

Span America Topper specifications

These figures are for the Topper MicroEnvironment Manager coverlet system. They are not mattress figures. The specification tab holds the stored values.

  • Weight capacity: 500 lb on 36 inch widths; 750 lb on 42 inch widths; 1000 lb on 48 inch widths; never above the mattress rating. 54 and 60 inch widths follow the mattress rating.
  • Mattress fit: 80 or 84 inches long (75 inches in the 54 inch width), 35 to 36, 42, 48, 54, or 60 inches wide, and 6 to 7 inches tall
  • Construction: two-layer Air Diffusion Matrix coverlet with fitted corners and an underside strap
  • Control unit: model 2100, footboard mount, green ready light
  • Power: 110-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz, 0.5 A maximum
  • Certification: IEC 60601-1-11, Type BF Class II
  • Cover: fluid-resistant, anti-fungal, bacteriostatic; wipe in place or machine wash the outer layer and air-dry
  • Materials: not made with natural rubber latex; halogen-free; flame resistant
  • Warranty: 24 months, non-prorated, on the cover and the control unit

Wipe the coverlet with a damp cloth and a hospital-grade disinfectant. Let it air-dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Phenolic or quaternary hospital disinfectants are the cleaners Span names. You can unzip the outer layer, machine wash it, and air-dry it. Unplug the control unit before you wipe it with a well-wrung cloth. Fitted sheets are the linen Span recommends. Keep stacked pads to a minimum so air can still reach the skin.

Coverlet Size

Use Coverlet Size to set the Span SKU. The default on this page is 80 x 36 in (MEM36). The picker lists:

  • 80 x 36 in (MEM36)
  • 84 x 36 in (MEM8436)
  • 80 x 42 in (MEM42)
  • 84 x 42 in (MEM8442)
  • 80 x 48 in (MEM48)
  • 84 x 48 in (MEM8448)
  • 75 x 54 in (MEM7554)
  • 80 x 54 in (MEM8054)
  • 80 x 60 in (MEM8060)
  • 84 x 60 in (MEM8460)

Match length and width to the mattress the coverlet will sit on, not to the outside of the bed frame. A replacement 2100 control unit is available if the original pump later needs a spare. If the care team named a foam overlay or a full air mattress rather than this coverlet, ask us for that surface instead of picking a size here.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers and sets up this coverlet across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, fit it on the mattress, hang the control unit, and check the airflow before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a coverlet first. For a scheduled in-home setup, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased coverlets are delivered and set up on a scheduled date.

Hospital support surfaces are oversized. The Canada-wide free ground-shipping offer on smaller goods does not apply. If the coverlet is going outside the GTA, ask us for a freight quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Which mattresses and beds this coverlet fits

Span lists the Topper for a pressure-redistributing healthcare mattress that is 6 to 7 inches tall, 80 or 84 inches long, and 35 to 36, 42, 48, 54, or 60 inches wide. The 75 inch length is the 54 inch width only (MEM7554). We match Coverlet Size to the mattress you already have, or to the mattress we are quoting with it.

A 36 x 80 Topper (MEM36) is the usual size for a standard 36 x 80 homecare deck such as the Drive Delta 1000. The Span America Encore sleep surface is 36, 39, or 42 inches wide and 76, 80, or 84 inches long, so we match a 36 or 42 inch Topper to those widths and use 80 or 84 inch length when the Encore is on those lengths. A 42 inch Topper is the size for a 42 inch deck such as the Drive 15300LW. The 36 inch Topper is written for a 35 to 36 inch mattress, which is the range that covers a 35 inch Advantage deck such as the Span America Advantage. We confirm the mattress width, length, and height before we write the quote.

The 2100 control unit needs a working wall outlet. Span rates it at 110-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz, and 0.5 A maximum. Hang it on the footboard, or strap it to the frame if the footboard will not take the hook. Route the airline and the power cord at the foot of the bed, clear of moving parts and walkways. Plug the supplied cord into the wall. A green light means the unit is ready. Unplug it to stop the air.

Related surfaces we already sell: the Gravity 9 as a foam mattress under the Topper, the Drive Balanced Aire NP if the care plan wants a non-powered air-and-foam mattress, and the Span America PressureGuard Custom Care Convertible LAL, non-powered Custom Care, and Span-Care Convertible if the therapist named a PressureGuard. See all medical mattresses if you are still choosing the surface the Topper will sit on.

Service and warranty

When something on the coverlet or the control unit needs work, you call the shop that delivered it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Span America manufacturer warranty

Span America's published warranty for the original purchaser is 24 months, non-prorated, on the cover and the control unit. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Span America Topper a mattress or a coverlet?

A coverlet. It sits on a pressure-redistributing healthcare mattress and a 2100 control unit hangs on the footboard. Span writes it as a powered microclimate layer, not as a mattress on its own.

Does the Topper replace my hospital mattress?

No. It works with the mattress. Span indicates it for use in combination with a pressure-redistributing surface. We fit it on the mattress you have, or we quote a mattress and a Topper together.

What size Topper fits a standard hospital bed?

Most homecare hospital beds we sell have a 36 x 80 sleep deck. That is MEM36, the default on this page. A 42 inch deck takes an 80 or 84 x 42. A 48 inch deck takes an 80 or 84 x 48. An extended 84 inch mattress takes a matching 84 inch Topper. Confirm the mattress height is 6 to 7 inches.

What is the weight rating?

Span lists 500 lb on the 36 inch sizes, 750 lb on the 42 inch sizes, and 1000 lb on the 48 inch sizes. The coverlet must also stay within the weight rating of the mattress underneath. The 54 and 60 inch sizes follow that mattress rating. If the combined load is near those figures, ask us about a wider size rather than stretching this one.

What power does the Topper need?

The 2100 control unit uses 110-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz, 0.5 A maximum. Plug the supplied cord into a wall outlet. A green light shows it is ready. Hang the unit on the footboard and keep the cord and airline clear of moving bed parts.

How do I clean the Topper?

Wipe it in place with a damp cloth and a hospital-grade disinfectant, then let it air-dry for 20 to 30 minutes. You can unzip the outer layer, machine wash it, and air-dry it. Unplug the control unit before you wipe it. Phenolic or quaternary hospital disinfectants are the cleaners Span names.

How loud is the control unit?

Span describes the 2100 as a compact, quiet control unit that provides a gentle, uninterrupted airflow. It hangs at the footboard and shows a green ready light. If the sound changes or the unit vibrates, call us and we will check it.

What is the warranty on the Span America Topper?

Span lists 24 months, non-prorated, on the cover and the control unit for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work on our service and repairs page.

Can funding help pay for this coverlet in Ontario?

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program does not cover hospital beds or mattresses. March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada, and community programs may still help. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will point you to the right route before anyone starts paperwork.

Can I rent a surface like this before I buy?

Westin Healthcare rents hospital beds with a therapeutic medical mattress included. A Span America Topper is not automatically that included surface. Call (905) 451-7743 and we will tell you what we can put in the home this week.

Who should not use the Topper?

Span does not write it for a person who has an unstable spinal cord injury or who is in cervical traction. It also follows every contraindication of the mattress it sits on. The person should be on the coverlet with the control unit plugged in and running, except for a short move of the bed.

What is included with the Span America Topper?

You get the fitted air cover in the Coverlet Size you pick, the 2100 control unit with its power supply, and a carry bag. A mattress and a bed frame are not included. Westin Healthcare delivers and fits it on the mattress across Brampton and the GTA.
