Who this back support is for
The Geo-Matrix Silverback Max is a wheelchair back support Blake Medical indicates for extra skin protection and vibration dampening on a power chair, including long periods in tilt. Blake says the spinal gel insert is there for the high-risk area along the spine when the chair tilts or reclines, and that the Max is especially useful when the spine has an over-curvature (kyphosis). The Silverback line is rated 250 lb (113 kg).

Fit, contour, and hardware
A wheelchair back support should match the chair, not a clothing size. Measure the back canes and the width the person needs. Blake's standard Max matrix uses widths 14, 16, 18, 20, and 22 inches, heights Standard 16 in, Tall 18 in, and Extra-Tall 20 in, plus custom. Active contour is 2.5 in deep. Deep is 4 in. Extra Deep is 6 in. This page is the Active contour.
Use Choose Width and Choose Height for the 16, 18, or 20 inch sizes we stock as standard. The order code is style, width, height, contour: Max Active examples look like MXA-1818. Blake prints 27 standard size configurations and will cut custom height and width.
The quick-release hardware uses a rubber grip around the back canes, a clamp, and a locking catch. Blake prints 45 degrees of angle adjustment and 2 inches of depth adjustment, and says a 16 inch back can sit on an 18 inch chair with 1.5 inch pins. We set the hardware on the chair at delivery.

Gel, cover, and care
The Geo-Matrix Silverback Max is a wheelchair back support with an aluminum shell, high-density foam, a full-height spinal gel insert, and an extra gel layer across the face. Blake's gel is a mineral-oil dry-polymer solid. Blake says it stays in place on a vertical surface and moves with the body in upright or full tilt.
The standard cover is ultra-stretchy breathable fabric. Wipeable fabric is a Blake extra. Follow the cover-care card that ships with the back. Do not use bleach on Geo-Matrix gel.

The Geo-Matrix Silverback Prime Backrest is the lighter sibling: spinal gel insert only, 2.5 in foam-and-gel thickness, same 250 lb rating. Pair a Max with the Geo-Matrix Platinum Cushion or the Geo-Matrix Silver Gel Cushion when the seating therapist wants gel on the seat as well.
A seating therapist should pick Max or Prime. We will not choose it from a web form.
Funding help for a wheelchair cushion or back support in Ontario
This cushion or back support is an ADP positioning device category item. Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) can fund 75% of the cost of positioning devices such as cushions and back supports when they are prescribed through an assessment by an ADP-registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist with an eligible mobility device, and some income-support programs cover the full cost.
