Drive Premium Guard Gel Overlay

The Drive Premium Guard is Drive Medical's gel-and-foam overlay, sold as the Premium Guard Gel Overlay. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and straps it onto the mattress for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. Official SKUs are 14893 (34 x 76 x 3.5, 300 lbs) and 14901 (42 x 76 x 3.5, 500 lbs). HCPCS E0185.

This is a gel overlay, not a mattress replacement. It sits on top of an existing hospital-bed mattress and holds on with four elastic corner straps. Drive lists 15 full-length gel bladders, a convoluted foam topper, and an 18-month warranty on foam and cover. Length is 76 inches, not 80.

Who this overlay is for

This overlay is for a person who already has a hospital-bed mattress and has been asked to add a gel surface on top. The 34-inch overlay sits on a standard 36-inch mattress on a Drive Delta 1000 or a Drive Delta 15235. The 42-inch overlay sits on a 42-inch mattress on the Drive 15300LW.

Choose Premium Guard when the therapist has asked for a gel overlay, not a new mattress. If the mattress underneath is worn out, replace the mattress first. A Gravity 7 or Gravity 8 is a replacement foam, not an overlay. Do not put this overlay on an alternating-pressure air mattress unless the therapist has said that pairing is safe.

Construction and how it works

Drive lists 15 gel bladders that cover the entire patient contact area "for the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers." Those are Drive's words. The bladders run head to toe so the gel is less likely to pit or leave a hole under one spot. The gel is aqueous and non-toxic, with polystyrene beads to limit migration.

A convoluted foam topper sits over the bladders. Four elastic corner straps hold the overlay on the mattress. The top cover is urethane-coated nylon, water resistant and vapor permeable. The base is vinyl, stain resistant and waterproof. Fire standard on the Drive sheet is TB117, not CFR 1633.

These figures are for the two Drive SKUs we sell. The specification tab holds the stored values. 14893 is 34 x 76 x 3.5 inches and 300 lbs on the 14893 card. 14901 is 42 x 76 x 3.5 inches and 500 lbs on the 14901 card. The family sheet prints the range 300-500 lbs and an 18-month foam and cover warranty.

76 inches is shorter than an 80-inch hospital mattress. The overlay should sit centred, with the straps on the four corners of the mattress underneath. It will not cover the last few inches of an 80-inch deck by itself.

Funding help for a therapeutic mattress in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: ODSP, March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), hardship funding programs, and community programs. Which Westin beds this overlay fits

The 34-inch overlay straps onto the mattress of a Drive Delta 1000 or a Drive Delta 15235. The 42-inch overlay straps onto the mattress of a Drive 15300LW. It does not replace those mattresses. Pair it with a sound Gravity 7 or a Drive 15301, not with a collapsed foam core.

Drive manufacturer warranty

Drive's current Premium Guard sheet covers the original purchaser with an 18-month warranty on the foam and an 18-month warranty on the cover. We handle the claim with you.

Frequently asked questions

Does this overlay replace my hospital mattress?

No. It straps onto a mattress that is already on the bed. If the mattress underneath is worn, replace the mattress. This overlay is 3.5 inches thick and 76 inches long.

How is a gel overlay different from Gravity foam?

Gravity 7 and Gravity 8 are full replacement mattresses. Premium Guard is a gel-and-foam pad that sits on top. Drive lists 15 gel bladders for pressure redistribution. The overlay does not have Gravity's three-layer foam core or Gravity's 7- to 10-year foam warranty.

How do I clean the Premium Guard cover?

Drive lists a water-resistant, vapor-permeable nylon top and a waterproof vinyl base. Wipe both with a mild detergent and let them dry. Do not machine-wash the gel bladders. A replacement cover is Drive 14893C.

What is the weight rating?

Drive's 14893 card lists 300 lbs. Drive's 14901 card lists 500 lbs. The family sheet prints the range 300-500 lbs. Use the number for the size you pick.

Why is it 76 inches long, not 80?

That is the official Drive length for both SKUs. Centre the overlay on an 80-inch mattress and use the four corner straps. The last few inches of the mattress will show.

Does this overlay have a pump or make noise?

No. The gel is static. There is nothing to plug in.

What is the warranty on Premium Guard?

Drive lists 18 months on the foam and 18 months on the cover for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the warranty work.

Can funding help pay for this overlay in Ontario?
