Description
The Drive Aluminum Transport Chair is Drive Medical's 19 lb companion-pushed chair in 17 inch (ATC17) and 19 inch (ATC19) seats. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and shows you the fold and the brakes for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is the everyday 8 inch-wheel member of Drive's aluminum transport family, beside the 12 inch-wheel Expedition and the lighter Fly-Lite.
A transport chair is pushed by a caregiver. The four composite 8 inch wheels stay small so the frame stays light and narrow. Drive lists a 300 lb weight capacity and a 19 lb chair. The back folds down at an aluminum hinge so the chair can sit in a car trunk.
Who this chair is for
This chair is for a person who needs a caregiver to push them for appointments, visits, and short trips, and for the family member who has to lift the chair into a car. Families usually call us when someone is coming home from hospital, when a walker is no longer enough for longer distances, or when a standard wheelchair is too heavy to load.
If the person will push themselves on large rear wheels, start with a standard wheelchair such as the Drive Cruiser X4. If you want 12 inch rear wheels for rougher pavement, use the Drive Expedition. If the person needs a 22 inch seat or a 450 lb rating, use the Drive ATC22 instead of stretching this frame.
- Caregiver-pushed trips to appointments, shops, and family visits
- A 17 inch or 19 inch seat with a 300 lb rating
- Anyone who needs a 19 lb chair that folds for a car trunk
Design and build
The frame is aluminum. Drive fits nylon upholstery, padded armrests, and a seat belt. Swing-away footrests come on both seat widths. The back uses a cast aluminum folding hinge so it drops for storage.
All four wheels are composite 8 inch, which Drive calls lightweight and maintenance free. Rear wheel locks hold the chair still for transfers. The caregiver pushes from the handles; the person in the seat does not self-propel on these small wheels.
- 19 lb aluminum frame
- Back folds down at the hinge
- Composite 8 inch wheels with rear locks
- Swing-away footrests, padded armrests, and a seat belt
- Nylon upholstery that wipes clean
Drive Aluminum Transport Chair specifications
These figures are for the ATC17 and ATC19 chairs Westin sells. The specification tab holds the stored values. Drive's current sheet lists a 19 lb chair, a 300 lb weight capacity, a 19 inch seat-to-floor height, a 16 inch seat depth, and a 24 lb carton.
ATC17 is a 17 inch seat, 15 inches between the arms, and 20 inches overall width when open. ATC19 is a 19 inch seat, 17 inches between the arms, and 22 inches overall width when open. Both fold to 33 inches long by 9 inches wide by 28 inches high. Overall length with footrests is 33 inches. Overall height is 39.5 inches.
Warranty for the original purchaser is a limited lifetime on remaining components, with 5 years on the brake handle and housing. Tires, upholstery, and other wear items are not covered.
Seat width, colour, and legrest
Use Size and Color to set the chair. Size is 17 inch or 19 inch. Color is black, blue, or red. Those are the three colours Drive currently lists for new ATC17 and ATC19 chairs.
Size
Pick 17 inch (ATC17) or 19 inch (ATC19). Measure the person's hips while they are sitting. The 17 inch seat is the narrower chair; the 19 inch seat is the wider everyday adult width in this family.
Color
Pick Black, Blue, or Red. The frame and accents follow that colour.
Legrest
Legrest offers Standard or Elevating. Standard is the swing-away footrest Drive ships on ATC17 and ATC19. Ask us before you pick Elevating if a therapist has asked for raised legs.
Funding help for a transport wheelchair in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) covers manual and power wheelchairs but does not cover transport chairs, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. If a self-propelled wheelchair could suit the person's needs, an ADP assessment may open 75% funding on an eligible chair. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a transport chair and a standard wheelchair?
A transport chair has small wheels and is pushed by a caregiver. A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels so the person can push themselves. The Drive ATC17 and ATC19 are transport chairs. If the person will self-propel, ask us about a standard wheelchair instead.
Who pushes this chair?
The caregiver pushes from the handles. Drive's owner booklet says the chair should not be used without an attendant. The person in the seat is not meant to self-propel on the 8 inch wheels.
Will it fold into a car trunk?
Yes. Fold the frame, drop the back at the hinge, and the chair packs to 33 inches by 9 inches by 28 inches. At 19 lbs it is light enough for most adults to lift into a trunk. Drive also says it is not a vehicle seat. The person rides in the car seat, not in the folded chair.
How do I choose 17 inch or 19 inch?
Measure the person's hips while they are sitting. ATC17 is 17 inches wide between the upholstery, with 15 inches between the arms and 20 inches overall. ATC19 is 19 inches wide, with 17 inches between the arms and 22 inches overall. If you are between sizes, call (905) 451-7743 and we will measure in the store.
What is the weight capacity?
Drive lists 300 lbs for ATC17 and ATC19. If the person is near that limit, or needs a wider seat, ask us about the Drive ATC22 instead of stretching this frame.
Why 8 inch wheels instead of 12 inch?
Eight inch composite wheels keep the chair light and short, which helps indoors and in a trunk. Twelve inch rear wheels, as on the Expedition, roll more easily over cracked sidewalks and short thresholds. This chair is the 8 inch model.
What is the warranty?
For the original purchaser, Drive covers the brake handle and housing for 5 years and the remaining components for a limited lifetime. Tires, upholstery, and other wear items are excluded. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
Is funding available in Ontario?
Depending on the person's situation and assessment, funding support may be available for mobility equipment. Visit the funding page or call (905) 451-7743 before you buy. We work with those programs every week.
Can I rent a transport chair before I buy?
Yes. Westin Healthcare rents transport wheelchairs for short stays and visits. See the transport wheelchair rental page, or call (905) 451-7743. Purchased chairs are delivered on a scheduled date.
What is included?
You get the Drive aluminum transport chair with swing-away footrests, padded armrests, nylon upholstery, a seat belt, and rear wheel locks. Use Size for 17 inch or 19 inch and Color for black, blue, or red. Legrest sets Standard or Elevating.
How is this different from the Drive Expedition?
Both are 19 lb Drive aluminum transport chairs with a 300 lb rating. This ATC family uses four 8 inch wheels and comes in 17 inch or 19 inch. The Expedition is 19 inch only, with 12 inch rear flat-free wheels and companion handbrakes.
Does the chair come in silver?
Drive's current ATC17 and ATC19 chairs are black, blue, or red. Use Color to pick one of those three.
