Description
The Drive Fly-Lite is Drive Medical's lightest aluminum transport chair in this family. Westin Healthcare sells the DFL19 colourways, delivers the chair, and shows you the fold and the locks for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is the travel-weight sibling of the 19 lb Drive ATC and the 12 inch-wheel Expedition.
Drive lists 16.2 lbs without footrests and 18.9 lbs with footrests. A transport chair is pushed by a caregiver. Folding back canes drop the backrest so the chair packs small. Drive lists a 300 lb weight capacity and a 19 inch by 15.5 inch seat.
Who this chair is for
This chair is for a person who needs a caregiver to push them, and for the caregiver who has to lift the chair often: into a trunk, up a step, or onto a train. Families usually call us when a 19 lb chair still feels heavy after a long day of appointments.
If you want 12 inch rear wheels for pavement, use the Drive Expedition. If you want a 17 inch seat, use the Drive ATC17. If the person will push themselves, ask us about a standard wheelchair such as the Drive Cruiser X4.
- Caregiver-pushed travel and daily errands when lift weight comes first
- A 19 inch seat with a 300 lb rating
- Anyone who needs a chair that folds at the back canes for a trunk
Design and build
The frame is aluminum. Drive fits plaid-style nylon upholstery on the blue and black chairs, and black upholstery on the burgundy frame. A carry pocket sits on the backrest. Tool-free, height-adjustable swing-away footrests come standard. Folding back canes drop the back for storage.
Rear wheels are 8 inch. Front casters are 6 inch. Aluminum rear wheel locks hold the chair still. A seat belt is included. The caregiver pushes; the person in the seat does not self-propel on these small wheels.
- 16.2 lb without footrests; 18.9 lb with footrests
- Folding back canes and a carry pocket
- 8 inch rear wheels and 6 inch front casters
- Aluminum rear wheel locks and a seat belt
- Tool-free, height-adjustable swing-away footrests
Drive Fly-Lite specifications
These figures are for the DFL19 chairs Westin sells (DFL19-BL, DFL19-BLK, and DFL19-RD). The specification tab holds the stored values. Drive's current sheet lists a 19 inch by 15.5 inch seat, an 18 inch seat-to-floor height, an 18 inch back, a 300 lb weight capacity, and a 22.6 lb carton.
Overall size with footrests is 33 inches long by 22 inches wide by 36 inches high. Folded size is 33 inches by 9 inches by 28 inches.
Warranty for the original purchaser, from Drive's owner booklet, is a limited lifetime on remaining components, with 5 years on the brake handle and housing. Tires, upholstery, and other wear items are not covered.
Colour
Use Choose Color for the Drive colourway:
- Blue frame with blue plaid upholstery (DFL19-BL)
- Black frame with black, white, and red plaid upholstery (DFL19-BLK)
- Burgundy frame with black upholstery (DFL19-RD)
Drive also lists a cup holder (STDS1040S) and elevating leg rests (STDELR-TF) as optional parts. Ask us if you need either one fitted.
Funding help for a transport wheelchair in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) covers manual and power wheelchairs but does not cover transport chairs, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. If a self-propelled wheelchair could suit the person's needs, an ADP assessment may open 75% funding on an eligible chair. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a transport chair and a standard wheelchair?
A transport chair has small wheels and is pushed by a caregiver. A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels so the person can push themselves. The Fly-Lite is a transport chair. The 8 inch rear wheels and 6 inch casters are for a light, short frame, not for self-propel.
Who pushes this chair?
The caregiver pushes from the handles. Drive's owner booklet says the chair should not be used without an attendant.
Will it fold into a car trunk?
Yes. Folding back canes drop the backrest. Drive lists a folded size of 33 inches by 9 inches by 28 inches. Without footrests the chair is 16.2 lbs. Drive also says it is not a vehicle seat. The person rides in the car seat, not in the folded chair.
What seat width is this?
Drive builds the Fly-Lite as a 19 inch by 15.5 inch seat. There is no 17 inch Fly-Lite. If 19 inches is too wide, use the 17 inch ATC17.
What is the weight capacity?
Drive lists 300 lbs. If the person is near that limit, ask us about a bariatric transport chair instead of stretching this frame.
Why 8 inch rear wheels and 6 inch casters?
The smaller wheels are how Drive keeps this chair at 16.2 lbs without footrests. They are at their best on smooth indoor floors and even sidewalks. For cracked pavement, the Expedition's 12 inch rear wheels roll more easily.
What is the warranty?
Drive's owner booklet covers the brake handle and housing for 5 years and the remaining components for a limited lifetime, for the original purchaser. Tires, upholstery, and other wear items are excluded. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
Is funding available in Ontario?
Depending on the person's situation and assessment, funding support may be available for mobility equipment. Visit the funding page or call (905) 451-7743 before you buy.
Can I rent a transport chair before I buy?
Yes. Westin Healthcare rents transport wheelchairs for short stays and visits. See the transport wheelchair rental page, or call (905) 451-7743. Purchased chairs are delivered on a scheduled date.
What is included?
You get the Drive Fly-Lite aluminum transport chair with height-adjustable swing-away footrests, a seat belt, a back carry pocket, aluminum rear wheel locks, and the colourway you pick under Choose Color. Cup holder and elevating leg rests are optional Drive parts. Ask us if you want them fitted.
How much does the chair weigh with the footrests on?
Drive lists 18.9 lbs with footrests and 16.2 lbs without. The footrests come standard and lift off without tools.
