Description

The Drive 20" Bariatric Steel Transport Chair is Drive Medical's BTR20, sold here as BTR20-B (blue) or BTR20-R (red). Westin Healthcare sells it and delivers it for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is the 20 inch member of Drive's bariatric steel transport pair. The 22 inch sibling is the Drive BTR22.

Drive lists a 20 inch by 18 inch seat, a 45 lb chair, a 450 lb weight capacity, and 12 inch flat-free rear wheels. A caregiver pushes it. Dual steel cross braces carry the 450 lb rating.

Who this chair is for

This chair is for a person who needs a 20 inch transport seat and a 450 lb Drive rating, and who has someone to push. Families usually call us when Drive's 17 inch or 19 inch steel transport chair is too narrow or too light, but a 22 inch frame would be wider than the doorways at home.

If the person needs 22 inches, use the Drive 22 inch BTR22. If they also want to self-propel at 20 inches and 250 lb is enough, see the Drive Poly-Fly TR20. This BTR20 is not a self-propel wheelchair.

  • Companion-pushed trips when a 20 inch seat is the fit
  • A Drive 450 lb rating on a reinforced steel frame
  • Indoor and outdoor use on 12 inch flat-free rear wheels

Design and build

The frame is reinforced steel with dual steel cross braces. Drive finishes it in blue or red. Upholstery is heavy-duty nylon with a pouch on the back. Arms are desk-length, padded, removable, and reversible so a transfer or a table approach is easier.

Rear wheels are 12 inch flat-free. That is a step up from the 8 inch casters on Drive's standard steel transport chair, and it is still a caregiver-pushed layout. Companion-activated wheel locks hold the chair for sitting and standing. Swing-away footrests come on the chair.

The chair folds. Drive lists 24.5 inches open and 9 inches closed for this 20 inch SKU. Drive's owner manual says a caregiver should operate the chair. It is not a car seat.

Drive 20" Bariatric Steel Transport Chair specifications

These figures are for Westin SKU BTR20-B, with BTR20-R as the red colour option. The specification tab holds the stored values. Drive's current sheet for BTR20 lists a 20 inch by 18 inch seat, a 45 lb chair, a 50 lb carton, a 450 lb capacity, a 19.5 inch seat-to-floor height, a 16 inch back, 24.5 inches open, and 9 inches closed.

Do not mix these numbers with the 22 inch BTR22. That chair is 49 lb, 26.5 inches open, and 11.5 inches closed. Both share the 450 lb rating and the 12 inch flat-free rear wheels.

Warranty for the original purchaser is Drive's Lifetime Limited term: defects in materials and workmanship for the life of that purchaser. It does not cover misuse, negligence, or normal wear, and it does not extend to rubber accessories, casters, and grips.

Colour options

Use Choose Color to set the frame. Drive's 20 inch SKUs are Blue (BTR20-B) and Red (BTR20-R). Colour is the choice that changes the Drive SKU.

Choose Color

  • BLUE (BTR20-B)
  • RED (BTR20-R)

Both colours are the same 20 inch chair. The default SKU is BTR20-B.

Funding help for a transport wheelchair in Ontario

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) covers manual and power wheelchairs but does not cover transport chairs, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. If a self-propelled wheelchair could suit the person's needs, an ADP assessment may open 75% funding on an eligible chair. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Delivery and setup in Brampton and the GTA

Westin's own team delivers this transport chair across Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. We bring it in, unfold it, set the footrests, and show you the wheel locks and the fold before we leave.

We have three stores in the Brampton and Toronto area if you would rather see a chair first. For a scheduled delivery, call (905) 451-7743 and we will book the next date that works. Same-day delivery is offered through our hospital bed rental service; purchased chairs are delivered on a scheduled date.

This chair folds for a car trunk. If it is going outside the GTA, ask us for a shipping quote. Inside Toronto and the GTA, White-Glove Delivery (bring-in, unwrap, test, take packaging away) is described on the shipping policy. Any charge is confirmed on your order.

Service and warranty

When something on the chair needs work, you call the shop that sold it, not a US parts desk. Westin Healthcare has a service and repairs department. Our technicians come to the home or workplace.

Drive manufacturer warranty

Drive's owner manual for the BTR20/BTR22 family prints a Lifetime Limited Warranty for the original purchaser: free of defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of that purchaser. The warranty does not cover misuse, negligence, or normal wear, and it does not extend to non-durable parts such as rubber accessories, casters, and grips. We handle the warranty claim with you. Ask us if an extended warranty is offered for your order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this transport chair and a standard wheelchair?

A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels so the person can push themselves. BTR20 has 12 inch flat-free rear wheels and is built for a caregiver to push. It is a heavy-duty transport chair, not a self-propel wheelchair.

Who pushes the BTR20?

A companion or attendant. Drive's owner manual says the chair should not be used without that help. Wheel locks are companion-activated.

Will it fold into a car trunk?

Drive lists 9 inches closed for the 20 inch chair. The frame folds and the back comes down. We can show you the fold at delivery. It is not approved as a seat inside a moving vehicle.

How is the 20 inch BTR20 different from the 22 inch BTR22?

Same family, same 450 lb rating, same 12 inch flat-free rear wheels. BTR20 is 20 inches wide, 24.5 inches open, 9 inches closed, and 45 lb. BTR22 is 22 inches wide, 26.5 inches open, 11.5 inches closed, and 49 lb. They are separate Drive SKUs.

What seat width do I need?

The seat is 20 inches by 18 inches. Measure the seated hip width and leave a little room on each side. If 20 inches is tight, use the 22 inch BTR22.

What is the weight capacity?

Drive lists 450 lbs for BTR20-B and BTR20-R. That rating is why this chair sits in Heavy Duty and Bariatric as well as Transport.

Why 12 inch rear wheels instead of 8 inch?

Twelve inch flat-free rear wheels roll more easily outdoors than the 8 inch casters on Drive's standard steel transport chair. They are still small enough that a caregiver pushes. They are not 24 inch self-propel wheels.

What is the warranty?

Drive's sheet and owner manual print a Lifetime Limited term for the original purchaser. Wear items such as casters and grips are outside that term. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.

Can funding help with this chair in Ontario?

Some Ontario routes can help with mobility equipment. Eligibility depends on the person's situation and assessment. Call (905) 451-7743 or use the funding page before you buy.

Can I rent a bariatric transport chair before I buy?

Westin Healthcare rents some mobility equipment. Ask us whether a bariatric transport chair can go out as a rental for your dates. Purchased chairs are delivered on a scheduled date.

What colour can I order?

Blue (BTR20-B) or red (BTR20-R), set under Choose Color. The chair itself is the same 20 inch specification either way.
