Drive Balanced Aire Non-Powered Self Adjusting Convertible Mattress

The Drive Balanced Aire is Drive Medical's non-powered self-adjusting convertible mattress, sold as the Balanced Aire Non-Powered Self Adjusting Convertible Mattress. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it on the bed for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. Official non-powered SKUs are BA9600-NP (35 x 80 x 7), BA9600-NP-42 (42 x 80 x 7), and BA9600-NP-84 (35 x 84 x 7).

This is a non-powered air-and-foam surface. Eight foam-filled air cylinders sit in a foam cavity under a 2.5-inch hybrid visco top. There is no pump in the carton. Drive's brochure says the surface is designed to prevent, treat, and heal pressure ulcers in the home or long-term-care setting. Drive's user manual adds that this is when the surface is used with a comprehensive pressure-ulcer management plan. An optional Drive pump (14005E or BA9600-PUMP) can convert it later to alternating pressure. That pump is sold separately.

Who this mattress is for

This mattress is for a person who needs more than Gravity foam and does not yet need a powered Med-Aire system every hour of the day. The 35-inch sizes sit on a standard homecare deck such as the Drive Delta 1000 or the Drive Delta 15235. The 42-inch size sits on the Drive 15300LW.

Choose Balanced Aire when the therapist has asked for a non-powered self-adjusting surface, or for a surface that can take a pump later. If a quiet foam mattress is enough, start with the Gravity 9. If the care plan already names alternating pressure with a pump in the box, look at a Med-Aire system instead of this non-powered SKU. Drive's manual lists unstable spinal cord injuries as a contraindication.

Construction and how it works

Eight non-circular air cylinders run across the bed inside a foam cavity. Drive says the non-circular shape is there so the cells do not roll or gap. A high-density foam layer and a 2.5-inch hybrid visco top sit over the cells. The heel end is sloped. The perimeter is high-density foam for transfers.

The mattress ships as an open system: the black tubes are unattached. Drive's manual describes three ways to use it. Join the male and female black tubes to hold the air in and use it as a static self-adjusting surface. Leave the tubes open and it behaves like a therapeutic foam mattress, with air moving as the person moves. Connect Drive control unit 14005E to the black-tagged hoses to run alternating pressure (4 LPM, 5-minute cycle). This listing is the non-powered SKU. The control unit is not included.

The cover is a removable 4-way stretch polyurethane, fluid resistant, low shear, and vapor permeable. Foam and cover are antimicrobial, antifungal, and latex free. Drive's manual allows the cover to be machine-washed at no higher than 120 F with a neutral detergent, then tumble-dried on low, with no bleach, and put back only when fully dry.

Drive's current shop sheet lists a 5-year limited mattress warranty and a 1-year control-unit warranty. Fire lines are CFR 1632 and CFR 1633. HCPCS on the card is E0373, E0277. Width is 35 inches on the standard SKUs, not 36. We check the fit on a 36-inch deck at delivery.

Which Westin beds this mattress fits

BA9600-NP in 35 x 80 is built for a standard homecare deck: the Drive Delta 1000 and the Drive Delta 15235. BA9600-NP-42 fits the Drive 15300LW 42-inch bariatric bed. It does not fit a 48- or 54-inch deck. If you later add pump 14005E, we still start from this same mattress.

Drive manufacturer warranty

Drive's current Balanced Aire sheet covers the original purchaser with a 5-year limited mattress warranty and a 1-year control-unit warranty. The control-unit year applies if you later add 14005E. Drive's manual voids the warranty if the surface is used for patient transfer or transport by the mattress handles, or if the cover is washed outside the printed limits. We handle the claim with you.

Is Balanced Aire a foam mattress or an air mattress?

Both. Eight foam-filled air cylinders sit under a 2.5-inch visco foam top. In non-powered use it self-adjusts without a plug. That is why Drive files it as a non-powered self-adjusting convertible surface, not as a Gravity foam mattress and not as a Med-Aire pump system.

Does this listing include a pump?

No. BA9600-NP is the non-powered SKU. Drive pump 14005E or BA9600-PUMP is a separate part. If you connect the pump later, Drive lists 4 LPM airflow, a 5-minute cycle, and a compressor-style control unit.

How do I clean the Balanced Aire cover?

What is the weight rating?

Drive's user manual lists 500 lbs on the 35-inch SKUs and 750 lbs on BA9600-NP-42. The shop spec table only prints the 35-inch 500 lb line. We use the manual figures for each size.

What size Balanced Aire fits a standard hospital bed?

Most Drive homecare beds we sell have a 36 x 80 sleep deck. Drive's standard Balanced Aire is 35 x 80. We check that the mattress sits tight to the frame and rails at delivery. A 42-inch deck takes BA9600-NP-42. An 84-inch extended deck takes BA9600-NP-84.

Does Balanced Aire make pump noise?

Not in the non-powered mode we sell. There is no motor in the carton. If you add 14005E later, the compressor will run on a 5-minute cycle. Ask us about that sound before you add the pump if the bedroom is quiet at night.

What is the warranty on Balanced Aire?

You get the Drive non-powered mattress in the size you pick under Choose Mattress Size. The black tubes are in the mattress. A pump, metal bed rails, and the bed frame are sold separately.

Is this the same as a Med-Aire alternating-pressure mattress?

No. Med-Aire is a powered air system with the pump in the box. Balanced Aire NP is self-adjusting without power, and it can take a pump later. If the care plan already names alternating pressure from day one, ask us about Med-Aire instead of converting this SKU after the fact.
