Description
The Drive 22 inch Bariatric Aluminum Transport Chair ATC22-R is Drive Medical's 22 inch, 450 lb companion-pushed chair in red. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and shows you the fold, the push bar, and the locks for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is the aluminum counterpart to the steel Drive BTR22.
A transport chair is pushed by a caregiver. Drive lists a 33 lb frame and a 450 lb weight capacity. Twelve inch rear flat-free wheels, an attachable push bar, swing-away footrests, anti-tippers, and a seat belt come on the chair.
Who this chair is for
This chair is for a person who needs a 22 inch seat and a 450 lb rating, and for the caregiver who still has to load a transport chair into a vehicle. Families usually call us when a 19 inch, 300 lb aluminum chair is too narrow or too light.
If 22 inches is wider than you need, look at the 20 inch steel Drive BTR20. If you want a steel 22 inch frame instead of aluminum, use the Drive BTR22. This chair is the red aluminum ATC22-R only.
- Caregiver-pushed trips when a 22 inch seat is the right fit
- A 450 lb rating on a 33 lb aluminum frame
- Anyone who needs the back to fold and the chair to close to 12 inches wide
Design and build
The frame is aluminum, finished in red. Drive uses heavy-duty, nylon-reinforced upholstery and padded armrests. The back folds down. An attachable push bar with a padded foam grip gives the caregiver a wide hold.
Rear wheels are 12 inch flat-free. Front casters are 8 inch. The chair has hand wheel-lock levers and companion-activated wheel locks. Swing-away footrests and anti-tippers come on the chair. A seat belt is included. The caregiver pushes; the person in the seat does not self-propel on these wheels.
- 33 lb aluminum frame, 450 lb rating
- 22 inch by 18 inch seat
- 12 inch rear flat-free wheels and 8 inch front casters
- Attachable push bar, hand locks, and companion locks
- Swing-away footrests, anti-tippers, and a seat belt

What you receive

Funding help for a transport wheelchair in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) covers manual and power wheelchairs but does not cover transport chairs, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), and community programs. If a self-propelled wheelchair could suit the person's needs, an ADP assessment may open 75% funding on an eligible chair. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation. Visit our funding page or call (905) 451-7743 to talk it through before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a transport chair and a standard wheelchair?
A transport chair has smaller wheels and is pushed by a caregiver. A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels so the person can push themselves. The ATC22-R is a transport chair. The 12 inch rear wheels help the caregiver. They are not self-propel wheels.
Who pushes this chair?
The caregiver pushes from the handles and the attachable push bar. Drive's owner booklet says the chair should not be used without an attendant. Hand wheel-lock levers and companion locks both sit on this frame.
Will it fold into a car trunk?
The back folds down and the chair closes to 12 inches wide. At 33 lbs it is heavier than the 19 lb ATC chairs, so plan on two people for some cars. Overall length with footrests is 41 inches. Drive also says it is not a vehicle seat. The person rides in the car seat, not in the folded chair.
How do I know a 22 inch seat is the right width?
Measure the person's hips while they are sitting. This chair is 22 inches of seat and 30 inches overall when open. If 22 inches is too wide, look at the 20 inch BTR20. If a 19 inch, 300 lb chair already fits, stay with the ATC19 or the Expedition.
What is the weight capacity?
Drive lists 450 lbs for ATC22-R. That rating includes the person in the seat. Do not load the chair past that figure.
Why 12 inch rear wheels on a bariatric chair?
Twelve inch flat-free rear wheels give the caregiver more roll than 8 inch transport wheels when the person in the seat is heavier. They still keep the chair shorter than a standard wheelchair with 24 inch self-propel wheels.
What is the warranty?
For the original purchaser, Drive covers the brake handle and housing for 5 years and the remaining components for a limited lifetime. Tires, upholstery, and other wear items are excluded. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
Is funding available in Ontario?
Depending on the person's situation and assessment, funding support may be available for mobility equipment. Visit the funding page or call (905) 451-7743 before you buy.
Can I rent a transport chair before I buy?
Yes. Westin Healthcare rents transport wheelchairs for short stays and visits. See the transport wheelchair rental page, or call (905) 451-7743, and ask whether a 22 inch chair is in the rental fleet. Purchased chairs are delivered on a scheduled date.
What is included?
You get the red Drive ATC22-R with the attachable push bar, swing-away footrests, anti-tippers, a seat belt, padded armrests, 12 inch rear flat-free wheels, hand wheel-lock levers, and companion locks. This is the red chair Drive lists, in one colour.
How is this different from the steel BTR22?
Both are Drive 22 inch, 450 lb transport chairs. The ATC22-R is aluminum and 33 lbs, with a 21 inch seat-to-floor height and a 30 inch open width. The BTR22 is the steel sibling. Pick aluminum when lift weight matters; pick steel if that is the frame your therapist asked for.
Does it come in blue?
Drive lists ATC22-R in red only. If you need another colour in a 22 inch bariatric transport chair, ask us about the steel BTR22, which Drive builds in more than one colour.
