Construction and how it works

A convoluted cushion is a sheet of foam whose top surface is moulded into peaks and valleys rather than left flat. The peaks compress under load while the valleys stay open, so the surface conforms more readily than a flat slab of the same foam and air can move through the gaps between the peaks. Span America makes the whole cushion from high-quality polyurethane foam.

Two numbers describe every configuration. The peak measurement is the overall height of the cushion at the top of a convolution, which Span America prints with a P suffix. The base is the solid, unconvoluted foam underneath, which is what actually holds the person up once the peaks have compressed. A thicker base gives more support and less bottoming out; a thinner base gives a softer, shallower cushion.

Density is the third variable. Span America offers a standard density and a premium density in the 18 by 16 inch, 4 inch peak, 0.75 inch base configuration, so the same shape can be had firmer or softer. The catalogue does not publish a density figure in numbers for either grade, so this page names the grade Span America uses and does not invent a value for it.

Choose the configuration by feel rather than by size alone. On the 18 by 16 inch size, the 0.75 inch base is the middle option and the 1.5 inch base gives a firmer foundation under the peaks. These cushions come as bare foam with no cover, so they are best on a clean, dry seat.
