The Med Aire Plus 14029DP is Drive Medical's 8-inch alternating-pressure and low-air-loss replacement with a 10-inch defined perimeter. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it up for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is the perimeter sibling of the Med Aire Plus 14029: same digital pump, with static tubing along the sides.

Drive lists a 450 lb weight capacity. The digital control unit (14029XP) runs at 8 litres per minute with cycle times of 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes. Cell-on-cell air cells hold a lower chamber of air for up to 24 hours if the power goes out.

Who this mattress is for

This surface is for a person who needs a full replacement mattress, not an overlay, and whose clinician wants a raised static edge as well as alternating pressure and low air loss. Drive designed the 14029 series to prevent, treat and heal pressure ulcers in the home or long-term care setting. The 10-inch perimeter is Drive's wording for reducing falls or entrapment along the length of the mattress. It does not replace a clinician's bed-rail plan.

Construction and how it works

This is a mattress replacement. The old sleep surface comes off the deck and this system goes on. Alternating pressure moves air through 8-inch cells on a chosen cycle. Low air loss vents a little air for microclimate. Four cells at the head stay more static so the head is steady (pillow feature).

A 10-inch static perimeter tube runs the length of the mattress. The therapy cells inside are still 8 inches deep. Cell-on-cell construction keeps a lower chamber inflated so the person is less likely to bottom out if the pump stops, for up to 24 hours per Drive.

The 14029XP digital unit adds Auto-Firm, Seat Inflate, lock-out, and three diagnostic alarms (air pressure, system, power). The cover is a removable 4-way stretch PU: fluid-resistant, low-shear, and vapour-permeable. Cells disconnect for service. A CPR valve dumps the air. Tubing uses EZ Lock / Quick Release.

Warranty for the original purchaser is 18 months on the control unit and mattress.

How is 14029DP different from the standard Med Aire Plus 14029?

Same digital pump, same 8-inch therapy cells, same 450 lb rating, same 18-month warranty. The DP adds a 10-inch static perimeter along the length. Drive's 84-inch option is on 14029, not on 14029DP.

What does alternating pressure plus low air loss mean?

Cells inflate and deflate on a 10-, 15-, 20-, or 25-minute cycle so the load moves. A little air vents for moisture control. That is not the same as a foam mattress, and it is not Drive's blower-based Harmony surface.

How do I clean the cover?

The 4-way stretch PU cover is removable, fluid-resistant, and vapour-permeable. Follow Drive's user manual for wipe-down and disinfectant. Do not immerse the control unit.

What is the weight rating?

Drive lists 450 lbs for 14029DP. If the person is near that limit, or you need a wider deck, use a Med Aire Plus bariatric width instead of stretching this surface.

What size bed does it fit?

36 inches by 80 inches. It is not a 42-inch or wider bariatric mattress.

How loud is the pump?

Drive does not print a decibel number on the 14029XP sheet. The digital unit hangs on the footboard and has a lock-out so settings are not changed by accident. If you need a printed 45 dB figure, that is on the PreserveTech Med-Aire Edge.

What happens if the power goes out?

Cell-on-cell chambers hold a lower layer of air. Drive states up to 24 hours of outage protection so the person is less likely to bottom out. The pump will not resume the cycle until power returns.

What is the warranty?

18 months on the control unit and mattress for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
