Med Aire Plus 8" Alternating Pressure and Low Air Loss Mattress System

The Med Aire Plus 14029 is Drive Medical's digital 8-inch alternating-pressure and low-air-loss replacement. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it up for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. It is the step-up from the analog Med Aire 14027, with a 450 lb rating and cell-on-cell cells that hold air in a power cut.

The 14029XP control unit is rated 8 litres per minute. Cycle times are 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes. Drive's owner manual prints a 20 to 60 mmHg pressure range. Two lengths are on this listing: 36 by 80 and 36 by 84 (Drive 14029-84).

Who this mattress is for

This mattress is for a person on a 36-inch hospital bed who needs a full air replacement and whose clinician wants a digital pump with more than one cycle time. Drive designed the 14029 to prevent, treat and heal pressure ulcers in the home or long-term care setting. Suitability still belongs to the clinician who knows the person's skin.

If a simple analog 10-minute pump is enough, start with the Med Aire 14027. If you want a 10-inch defined perimeter, use the Med Aire Plus 14029DP. If the person needs more than 450 lbs or a wider deck, see the 42-inch Med Aire Plus 14030.

Construction and how it works

This is a mattress replacement. Twenty 8-inch cells sit on a static 4-inch cell-on-cell base. Alternating pressure moves the load on a chosen cycle. Low air loss vents a little air for microclimate. Head-end cells stay more static (pillow feature).

The lower chamber stays inflated if the pump stops. Drive states up to 24 hours of outage protection so the person is less likely to bottom out. The 14029XP digital unit adds Auto-Firm, Seat Inflate (about 10 mmHg extra for sitting), lock-out, and three diagnostic alarms for air pressure, the system, or power. Eight comfort weight levels sit on the plus and minus keys.

The cover is a removable 4-way stretch PU: fluid-resistant, low-shear, and vapour-permeable. Cells disconnect for service. A CPR valve dumps the air. Tubing uses EZ Lock / Quick Release. Drive's official video shows first fill can take about 40 minutes; the 14427QF quick-fill accessory fills faster and is sold separately.

Pick 84 inches only when the bed deck is extended to 84 inches. On a Drive Delta, that is the 15030EXTKIT. Ask us before you choose 84 if you are not sure the frame is extended. You get the mattress and the 14029XP digital control unit with either length.

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. How is the Med Aire Plus different from the Med Aire 14027?

When do I pick 80 inches versus 84 inches?

Match the bed deck. Most homecare beds are 80 inches. Pick 84 inches only when the frame has the 4-inch extender on and you have a matching 84-inch length. The 84-inch Drive SKU is 14029-84.

How do I clean the cover?

The 4-way stretch PU cover is removable, fluid-resistant, and vapour-permeable. Follow Drive's user manual for wipe-down and disinfectant. Do not immerse the control unit.

What is the weight rating?

Drive lists 450 lbs for 14029 and 14029-84. Near that limit, or if you need more width, use a Med Aire Plus bariatric size.

How loud is the pump?

Drive does not print a decibel number on the 14029XP sheet. The unit hangs on the footboard. Lock-out stops accidental button presses at night.

What happens if the power goes out?

Cell-on-cell chambers keep a lower layer of air. Drive states up to 24 hours of outage protection. The cycle does not resume until power returns.

What is the warranty?

18 months on the control unit and mattress for the original purchaser. Westin Healthcare processes the claim.
