The Med Aire 5 is Drive Medical's powered overlay. It sits on top of an existing foam or innerspring mattress and adds alternating pressure plus low air loss. Drive's current kit is 14025NS. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and sets it up for homes in Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area.

This is an overlay, not a full replacement mattress. Seventeen 5-inch air cells go on the mattress you already have. The control unit runs a 10-minute alternating cycle and can also hold a static surface. Drive lists a 350 lb weight capacity and a 24-month warranty on the overlay and control unit.

Who this mattress is for

This overlay is for a person who still has a usable hospital-bed mattress and needs a powered air surface on top of it. Families usually call us when a therapist has asked for alternating pressure or low air loss, and the existing mattress is still sound. Drive designed the 14025NS to prevent, treat and heal pressure injuries in the home or long-term care setting. Suitability still belongs to the clinician who knows the person's skin.

If you need a full replacement instead of a topper, start with the Med Aire 8 Inch 14027 or the foam-base Med Aire Assure 14530. If the person is near or over 350 lbs, this overlay is not the match.

Construction and how it works

Alternating pressure means the cells inflate and deflate on a timer so the load on the skin moves. Low air loss means a little air vents through the surface to help with moisture and microclimate. Both run from one control unit hung on the footboard.

Seventeen individual 5-inch cells make up the overlay. The three cells at the head stay static so the head does not bob with the cycle. Drive calls that the pillow feature. A visual alarm lights when air pressure is low. The cover is removable nylon: fluid-resistant, low-shear, and vapour-permeable. Cells come off for service. A CPR valve dumps the air quickly. Tubing uses Drive's EZ Lock / Quick Release connector.

Place it on a standard foam or innerspring mattress. It does not replace that mattress.

These figures are for Drive's current 14025NS overlay, the kit Westin lists with SKU 14025N. The specification tab holds the stored values. Drive's sheet lists a 350 lb weight capacity, 17 cells, a 10-minute alternating cycle with static mode, a visual low-pressure alarm, and a 24-month warranty.

The overlay is built for a 36-inch by 80-inch hospital bed. The cells are 5 inches deep. Drive's 2025 catalog also prints a 36 by 80 by 8 inch line for this SKU; the working number for therapy height is the 5-inch cell. Official Drive airflow (LPM) is not printed on the current sheet.

Warranty for the original purchaser is 24 months on the control unit and overlay.

Size and what is included

This listing is one size. There is no size picker. You get the 17-cell overlay and the analog control unit. It is meant for a 36-inch by 80-inch hospital-bed mattress. If the bed is 84 inches long, call us before you order. A quick-fill pump (Drive 14427QF) is a separate accessory, not in the carton.

Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not cover hospital beds or mattresses, so plan around other routes. Is the Med Aire 5 an overlay or a replacement mattress?

It is an overlay. It goes on top of a standard foam or innerspring mattress. It does not replace that mattress. Drive's full 8-inch replacement in this line is the Med Aire 14027.

How is alternating pressure different from a foam mattress?

A foam mattress stays still. This overlay's cells inflate and deflate on a 10-minute cycle so the load on the skin moves. Low air loss vents a little air to help with moisture. The three head cells stay static so the head is steady.

How do I clean the cover?

The nylon cover is removable, fluid-resistant, and vapour-permeable. Wipe it with the disinfectant listed in Drive's user instructions. Do not soak the control unit. Ask us if you want a replacement cover.

What is the weight rating?

Drive lists 350 lbs for 14025NS. If the person is near that limit, ask us about a higher-capacity Med Aire Plus surface instead of stretching this overlay.

What size bed does it fit?

It is built for a 36-inch by 80-inch hospital-bed mattress. It is not the 42-inch, 48-inch, 54-inch, or 60-inch bariatric size.

How loud is the pump?

Drive does not print a decibel rating on the current 14025NS sheet. The control unit hangs on the footboard. If pump sound is the main worry, ask us about the PreserveTech Med-Aire Edge, where Drive prints 45 dB.

What is the warranty?

Can I rent a powered mattress before I buy?

What happens if the power goes out?

This overlay has no foam base and no cell-on-cell chamber. When the pump stops, the cells go soft. The person is then on the mattress underneath. If you need a surface that still holds shape in an outage, look at the Med Aire Assure or a Med Aire Plus with cell-on-cell cells.
