Description
The Drive plastic tub rail, item 12044, is Drive's recycled-plastic rail that clamps onto the tub wall with the handle standing perpendicular to the tub. Westin Healthcare sells it, delivers it, and can fit it for homes across the Greater Toronto Area. Drive prints a 300 lb (136 kg) rating, a 16.5 in (41.9 cm) height, and a clamp that opens from 3 to 6.25 in (7.6 to 15.9 cm).
This is not the steel Drive 12036 family. Those rails sit parallel to the tub and clamp 3 to 7 in. 12044 is the plastic, perpendicular handle.
Who this rail is for
The Drive 12044 plastic tub rail is for a person who wants a handhold on the tub wall without drilling, whose tub wall measures between 3 and 6.25 in, and who stays at or under Drive's 300 lb rating. Families here usually call when they want the lighter 5 lb (2.3 kg) plastic rail and they already know the steel clamp-on is a different shape.
Drive does not print a fiberglass sentence on the 12044 card. We still check the tub wall in the store before we send it home.
- 16.5 in (41.9 cm) handle, perpendicular to the tub
- Clamp 3 to 6.25 in (7.6 to 15.9 cm) on the tub wall
- 300 lb (136 kg) recycled-plastic rail, tool-free
Clamp fit and tub-wall thickness
Drive's clamp on 12044 opens from 3 to 6.25 in (7.6 to 15.9 cm). That is a narrower window than the steel 12036 family (3 to 7 in). Measure the thickness of the tub wall at the spot you will clamp. If that number sits inside 3 to 6.25 in, Drive's clamp can cover it. If the wall is thicker than 6.25 in, look at the Drive steel clamp-on instead.
Drive prints tool-free, easy to install. Clean and dry the tub wall, open the clamp, seat the pads, and tighten until the rail does not shift. Retighten after the first few baths.
Height, grip, and build
Drive sets 12044 at 16.5 in (41.9 cm). The handle is perpendicular to the tub, not parallel. Drive calls the shape ergonomic and says it provides a comfortable, safe grip. The carton is retail packed and marked as made using recycled materials. Drive prints a unit weight of 5 lb (2.3 kg) and carton dimensions 15 x 4 x 12.5 in (38.1 x 10.2 x 31.8 cm).
Drive does not print a second grip height on the 12044 card. We will not invent one.

Plastic or steel clamp-on
12044 is the plastic Drive rail with a 16.5 in perpendicular handle and a 3 to 6.25 in clamp. The Drive 12036 is white powder-coated steel, parallel to the tub, fixed at 14.5 in, clamp 3 to 7 in. RTL12036-ADJ is that same steel family with a 14.5 to 17 in handle. A wall grab bar, such as the EZee Life knurled bar, mounts on the room wall instead of the tub wall.
The other clamp-on on our bath-tub-rails shelf is the AquaSense Multi-Adjust Bath Safety Rail (785-340).
Funding help for bathroom safety equipment in Ontario
Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP) does not fund bathroom safety equipment, so plan around other routes. Funding that may help instead: March of Dimes Canada's Home and Vehicle Modification Program, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), extended health plans, and community programs. Westin Healthcare's staff work with these programs every week and will point you to the right route for your situation.
